Development and Validation of Treatment Expectation Scale for Patients with Liver Cancer

IntroductionLiver cancer is one of the most common tumors in the world. Patients with liver cancer usually face substantial physical, psychological, and social burdens, which has a great demand and expectation to ease the burden in all aspects. This study aimed to develop and validate a scale evaluating treatment expectations for patients with liver cancer (TES-LC).Material and methodsThe study was conducted in three phases. In the first stage, we used literature reviews and semi-structured interviews to generate the items to be included in the questionnaire TES-LC (version 1). In the second stage, two rounds of the Delphi expert consultation method were used to modify the first version to form TES-LC (version 2). In the third stage, projects were selected through project analysis and exploratory factor analysis to create TES-LC (version 3); version 3 was tested for reliability and validity to generate version 4.ResultsThe final version of the TES-LC contains 19 items in 5 dimensions: disease symptoms, practical needs, psychological state, emotional satisfaction, and social function. Five common factors were extracted through exploratory factor analysis, explaining 60.11% of the variance. In the validation factor analysis, the fitting effect of the five-factor model was satisfactory after modification. The TES-LC had good internal consistency, with a Cronbach's alpha coefficient of 0.911 for the total scale.ConclusionsThe TES-LC developed in this study has good reliability and validity and can provide a standardized tool for measuring treatment expectancy in patients with liver cancer, which is of good clinical utility.

The role of patient treatment specific expectations on the outcomes of musculoskeletal physical therapy treatment: A scoping review

AbstractBackgroundIt is unknown how well patient treatment expectations are related to outcomes within musculoskeletal physical therapy. The purpose of this scoping review was to examine the association between patient treatment expectations and outcomes following physical therapy care for musculoskeletal injury and to identify gaps in the literature on this topic.Data SourcesPubMed, CINAHL Complete, PEDro, SPORTDiscus, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, and PsycINFO were searched from January 2005. Concepts represented in the search included physical therapy, patient expectations, and patient outcomes, as well as their relevant synonyms.Data Extraction and SummaryA custom spreadsheet was used to chart demographic details, study design, and key findings from eligible studies. The critical appraisal skills programme (CASP) for cohort studies was used to determine reporting comprehensiveness and fit for inclusion into the review.ResultsTwelve (12) studies were included in this review representing 1855 patients across a variety of patients with musculoskeletal disorders. Studies were most commonly secondary analyses of controlled trials (n = 10) or controlled trials (n = 2) and yielded high CASP scores. A wide range of methods were used to determine patient expectations. The impact of patient treatment expectations was mixed, with some studies indicating a positive relationship between expectation fulfilment and improved outcomes, while others indicate no such relationship.ConclusionThe relationship between treatment expectations and outcomes within musculoskeletal physical therapy practice is not clear. Future studies with planned comparisons are needed to define appropriate methods to seek patient expectations and measure outcome differences between groups based on expectation fulfilment.

The Melbourne Study of Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy II: Patients' and psychotherapists' perspectives on expectations, therapeutic experience and benefits

AbstractThe naturalistic, longitudinal Melbourne Study of Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy was conducted in a subsidized community clinic established by the Victorian Association of Psychoanalytic Psychotherapists as a demonstration project operating over 8 years. It offered lower SES adults twice‐weekly psychoanalytic psychotherapy for 2 years. An independent research program used the RE‐AIM planning and evaluation framework to investigate the Reach, Effectiveness, Adoption, Implementation and Maintenance of the service. Complementary quantitative and qualitative methodologies studied mental health and general‐life functioning outcomes and underlying processes of treatment. Two papers present the qualitative arm of the research, exploring the lived experience of the psychotherapy, reported contemporaneously and retrospectively by patients and psychotherapists. This first paper details the qualitative design and methods employed. In‐depth semi‐structured narrative interviews during psychotherapy, upon completion at 2 years, and at an additional 8‐month follow‐up point for patients, were conducted. Analysis of the narrative transcripts of 143 participant interviews revealed themes regarding patient expectations of treatment and the perceptions of both patients and psychotherapists of the long‐term psychoanalytic psychotherapy experience and its benefits. Narratives thus provided evidence of the Reach, Effectiveness, Adoption, Implementation and Maintenance of the service. The findings enrich understanding of the effective processes underlying the outcomes of the quantitative arm of the study reported separately. The second qualitative paper presents the findings concerning participants' experiences of facilitative and challenging aspects of the treatment, as well as the implications of the qualitative findings overall.

The perspective of Polish patients with rheumatoid arthritis - treatment expectations, patient-reported outcomes, and digital literacy (the SENSE study).

A widely accepted treat-to-target strategy for rheumatoid arthritis (RA) requires the patient's perspective in making treatment decisions. However, data on treatment preferences and expectations of Polish patients with RA are scarce. The aim of the study was to determine the satisfaction with treatment and the nature of therapeutic preferences and expectations of Polish patients with moderate to severe RA. Fifty-two adult Polish patients with moderately to highly active RA were asked to complete patient-reported outcomes and patient-provided information questionnaires. Additionally, patient sociodemographic and clinical data and information on patient current and planned treatment strategies were collected. The mean global assessment of patient satisfaction with treatment was 64.1 ±24.6, below the level of indicating satisfaction. Rheumatoid arthritis negatively impacted patients' lives, resulting in a 37.8% impairment of work efficiency and 45% impairment of total activity. Primary treatment expectations for patients were lasting relief of RA symptoms, reduced pain and swelling in joints, increased flexibility of joints, and general improvement of arthritis. The most acceptable potential side effect was weight gain and the least acceptable were increases in the risk of cardiovascular disease, infection, and malignancies. The rapid onset of the drug effect (up to 1 week) was a preference of 48.1% of patients. Access to internet health resources was important for 44.2% of patients, but the median total eHealth literacy score in the study population was 24.0 (interquartile range: 20.5-28.0, range 8-37), which means low digital health literacy (DHL). Understanding these treatment preferences and expectations of patients with RA is essential for clinical practitioners to facilitate shared treatment decision-making. Digital health literacy data suggest the need of further improvement.

Cross-Cultural Adaptation and Measurement Properties of the Expectations for Treatment Scale (ETS) for Greek-Speaking Patients.

Introduction Patients' treatment expectations are key factors influencing the health outcomes in various medical conditions. Using validated measures to capture these expectations has been strongly suggested to improve the prognosis of the health outcome and promote research investigations. The Expectations for Treatment Scale (ETS) is a well-established questionnaire designed to accurately measure treatment expectations in patients with low back pain; however, it is not available in Greek yet. We aimed to translate and cross-culturally adapt the ETS in Greek (ETS-Gr) and evaluate its reliability and validity in a Greek-speaking population with musculoskeletal disorders. Methods We followed published recommendations for the translation and cross-cultural adaptation process of the scale.Face and content validity were evaluated using interviews with patients and experts. Internal consistency, test-retest reliability, and measurement error were evaluated in 52 patients with musculoskeletal conditions. Results During forward and backward translation minor linguistic discrepancies were detected and effectively adapted for Greek-speaking patients. The ETS-Gr presented a high level of content validity (item content validity index: 0.88-1; and average scale content validity index: 0.90), acceptable internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha: 0.84), and excellent test-retest reliability (intraclass correlation coefficient: 0.96, 95% confidence interval: 0.93-0.98). Conclusions The ETS-Gr is a short, reliable, and valid instrument to measure pre-treatment expectations in patients with musculoskeletal disorders. Future investigations including other medical conditions are required.

Disease‐ and treatment‐related expectations, attitudes, and beliefs among adult patients initiating or switching biological therapies for psoriasis

AbstractBackgroundThe treatment expectations of patients with psoriasis are essential for clinical outcomes.ObjectivesTo examine disease‐ and treatment related intra‐ and interpersonal factors and their relation to treatment expectations among patients with psoriasis who initiate or switch biological therapy.MethodsConsecutive adult patients with moderate to severe psoriasis who initiated or switched biological therapy completed a questionnaire regarding their disease‐ and treatment‐related expectations. Additionally, they filled out Patients' Attitudes and Beliefs Scale (PABS), Trust in Physician Scale (TPS) and Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI) questionnaires. Psoriasis Area Severity Index (PASI) was scored before and 3 months after treatment initiation.ResultsA total of 65 patients participated; 28% expected <90% clearance of psoriasis following treatment, whereas 72% expected 90%–100% clearance. No differences were found between bionaïve and non‐naïve patients. Mutually adjusted analysis showed that female gender (p = 0.026), higher PASI score (p = 0.004) and lower TPS score (p = 0.006) were associated with high overall expectations towards biological therapy. PABS scores were not significantly associated with high expectations. The proportion of patients having low expectations was greatest when asked about work/education, partner interaction and socializing. Additionally, high expectations towards these subjects were associated with higher DLQI (p = 0.047, p = 0.014 and p = 0.056, respectively). Patients with high overall expectations towards biological therapy had a significantly greater reduction in absolute PASI score following treatment (4.7 vs. 2.75), p = 0.048.ConclusionsTechniques aimed at maximizing patients' expectation‐effect (placebo response) should be implemented in daily clinical practice. Knowledge about gender, disease severity, impact on life quality and patients' trust in physician should be taken into consideration.

Burden of adult atopic dermatitis and unmet needs with existing therapies

ObjectivePatients with atopic dermatitis (AD) have low treatment satisfaction. In this study, we evaluated the humanistic burden, treatment satisfaction, and treatment expectations in patients with AD in the United States.MethodsAdults with AD recruited through the National Eczema Association and clinical sites completed a web-based survey comprising the Patient-Oriented SCORing Atopic Dermatitis (PO-SCORAD), Dermatology Life Quality Index; Work Productivity and Activity Impairment Questionnaire-Atopic Dermatitis; Treatment Satisfaction Questionnaire for Medication (TSQM); and answered questions on healthcare provider (HCP) visits, treatment history, and treatment goals. Descriptive analyses were performed to compare participants by severity.ResultsAmong 186 participants (mean [standard deviation] age 39.7 [15.3] years, 79.6% female), 26.9%, 44.6%, and 26.3% of the participants had mild, moderate, or severe AD, respectively, based on PO-SCORAD. Greater disease severity was associated with a greater impact on work and daily life, decreased TSQM scores, and increased HCP visits. Corticosteroid topical cream or ointment (53.8%) and oral antihistamines (31.2%) were most commonly used for the treatment of AD. Participants reported declining/stopping/changing AD treatment due to the potential for side effects or lack of efficacy. ‘Leading normal lives’ (28.0%) and ‘being itch-free’ (33.9%) were important treatment goals.ConclusionsIndividuals with AD, especially severe disease, face a considerable humanistic burden even while using treatment.

Chronic non-cancer pain management - insights from Australian general practitioners: a qualitative descriptive study.

The study explored the experiences and perceptions of GPs regarding the management of chronic non-cancer pain (CNCP). Specifically, participants were asked to identify perceived enablers and barriers to CNCP care and how the care of patients with CNCP may be improved. The study utilised a qualitative descriptive methodology. General practice in Western Australia. The sample was purposive with 12 Australian GPs from predominantly metropolitan locations and with experience in managing CNCP. Semi structured interviews were conducted. Each interview was of 45-60min duration. All interviews were audio recorded and transcribed using a secure transcription service. Thematic analysis developed themes inductively and deductively. Themes emerged regarding: the importance of a holistic and personalised approach; the important role of a coordinating GP; the need for an evidence-based approach to opioid management; concerns relating to access to multidisciplinary services; the importance of clinician and patient education regarding CNCP; and an acknowledgement of the challenges for doctors and patients in managing CNCP. Currently, the management of CNCP in Australia is challenging. Notable challenges include: difficulties with continuity of patient care; challenges with patient expectations of treatment, in particular opioid medications; difficulty with access to the health services required to enable holistic care; and the need for improved pain education in the community. The breadth of these challenges suggests there is a need for supportive organisational and structural considerations in the healthcare system to enable optimal care of CNCP in the community.

Objective: To determine treatment expectations of patients and parents, and the initial effects of fixed functional devices on oral health-related quality of life. Materials and Method: The study comprised 50 patients (39 female, 11 male, mean age 16.24 years) with Angle Class II,1 malocclusion, who were planned to be treated with forsus fatigue resistant device (FFRD). Treatment expectations of the patients and their parents/legal guardians were assessed before the treatment. The Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-14) was assessed 1-month after bonding (T1), and repeated 1-month after placement of FFRD (T2). Statistical analysis included Wilcoxon Signed Rank test for the evaluation of the differences in scores between treatment periods and Mann-Whitney U test for the evaluation of gender differences. Results: Main motivation for seeking orthodontic treatment was to improve dental appearance for the patients, and facial esthetics for their parents. Results declared that girls took their orthodontic problems more seriously than boys (p<0.05). The highest mean scores in OHIP-14 were achieved for “difficulty in eating”, and “feeling pain”. No significant difference between treatment periods was noted. Conclusion: This study highlighted the lack of serious adverse effects of the use of fixed functional devices on patients’ quality of life, and that patients might probably experience problems about physical status, mainly for functional limitations, rather than psychological status and social interactions. The findings may assist clinicians in understanding the concerns about these appliances.

The importance of an early onset of migraine preventive disease control: A roundtable discussion

Background: Newly approved migraine preventive therapies have allowed for rapid control of migraine activity, offering potential to minimize the burden of migraine. This report summarizes a roundtable discussion convened to analyze evidence for early onset of prevention, ascertain its clinical relevance, and provide guidance for healthcare professionals in crafting goals and treatment expectations for patients with migraine initiating preventive therapy. Methods: A virtual roundtable meeting of migraine clinicians, researchers, and patient advocates convened in October 2020. Participants reviewed and discussed data summarizing patient and healthcare professional perceptions of migraine prevention and evidence from the peer-reviewed and gray literature to develop corresponding recommendations. Summary: Evidence from clinical studies of anti-calcitonin gene-related peptide monoclonal antibodies (erenumab, fremanezumab, galcanezumab, and eptinezumab) and the chemodenervation agent onabotulinumtoxinA indicate that patients may experience reduction of migraine activity within 7 days of drug administration and early attainment of disease control is associated with improvements in clinically important outcomes. The roundtable of experts proposes that early onset be defined as demonstration of preventive benefits within 1 week of treatment initiation. We recommend focusing discussion with patients around “disease control” and potential benefits of early onset of prevention, so patients can set realistic preventive therapy goals and expectations.

Evaluation of Patient Expectations before Carpal Tunnel Release.

Background:Carpal tunnel release (CTR) is common, yet patient treatment expectations remain unclear. The primary purpose was to describe patient expectations before CTR. Secondarily, we aimed to identify factors influencing expectations.Methods:Included patients underwent unilateral or bilateral CTR between 2015 and 2017 at a single academic center. Expectations regarding the level of relief/improvement were queried. Area deprivation index (ADI) was used to measure social deprivation. Univariate and multivariable logistic regression identified factors associated with expecting great relief/improvement.Results:Of 307 included patients, mean age was 54 ± 16 years and 63% were women. Patients most commonly expected great (58%) or some (23%) relief/improvement. Few patients expected little (3%) or no (4%) relief/improvement, and 13% had no expectations. In the multivariable analysis, male sex, lower social deprivation, and lower BMI were associated with expecting great relief/improvement. Age, surgical technique (open versus endoscopic), use of the operating room versus procedure room, and preoperative factors (constant numbness, weakness/atrophy, duration of symptoms, and QuickDASH) were not associated with expectations.Conclusions:Most patients expect some to great improvement after CTR. This was independent of several factors with a known association with worse outcomes (advanced age, atrophy/weakness, and constant numbness). Male sex was associated with the expectation of great improvement, in which superior outcomes relative to females have not been borne out in the literature. These findings highlight patient counseling opportunities. The observed association between social deprivation and expectations warrants further investigation, as the socioeconomically disadvantaged experience worse healthcare outcomes in general.

Modifiable risk factors, symptoms, wellbeing and treatment expectations in patients with atrial fibrillation

Background/AimsAtrial fibrillation is the most common heart rhythm disorder, which increases the risk for stroke and heart failure, and commonly impairs quality of life. Increasing evidence has shown the causative role of several risk factors and suggested that aggressive lifestyle interventions might reduce atrial fibrillation incidence and effects. The size of the problem and how to provide optimal multidisciplinary management is less well known. This study aimed screened patients with atrial fibrillation for potentially modifiable risk factors and describe patients' symptom burden, wellbeing and treatment expectations.MethodsThe atrial fibrillation risk profile, symptom burden, wellbeing and expectations of future treatment were studied in 352 patients. Various questionnaires and instruments were used, in addition to medical history assessment.ResultsIn total, 69% of patients had 1–5 possibly modifiable risk factors for atrial fibrillation: 50% were overweight/obese, 39% had a blood pressure of >140/90 mmHg, 28% had symptoms of obstructive sleep apnoea and 25% reported no physical exercise. Most patients had high expectations for their upcoming atrial fibrillation treatment, but men expected full recovery more often than women. Worries about future health and reduced survival were present in approximately 28% of patients.ConclusionsMost patients with paroxysmal/persistent atrial fibrillation had potentially modifiable risk factors for atrial fibrillation and other cardiovascular events suitable for lifestyle interventions. Several patients experienced limitations in daily life, anxiety related to atrial fibrillation, and worry about their future health and survival. The results of this study might help identify relevant components for risk management and plan an individualised programme for atrial fibrillation patients.

The use of psoriasis biomarkers, including trajectory of clinical response, to predict clearance and remission duration to UVB phototherapy.

Remission duration and treatment response following phototherapy for psoriasis are highly variable and factors influencing these are poorly understood. Our primary outcome was to investigate whether selected clinical/serum biomarkers were associated with remission duration, and secondly with psoriasis clearance at the end of phototherapy. In addition, we looked at whether early trajectory of UVB clearance was associated with final clearance outcome. We performed a prospective cohort study of 100 psoriasis patients, routinely prescribed Narrowband UVB and measured selected clinical and biochemical biomarkers, including weekly PASI (psoriasis area and severity index) scores. Patients were followed up for 18months. The median time to relapse was 6months (95% CI 5-18) if PASI90 was achieved, and 4months (95% CI 3-9) if less than PASI90 was achieved. Achieving PASI100 did not result in prolonged remission. On UVB completion, the median final PASI (n=96) was 1.0 (IQR 0.5, 1.6) with 78 (81%) achieving PASI75 and 39 (41%) achieving PASI90. Improved PASI90 response was significantly associated with lower BMI, higher baseline PASI, non-smoking status and lower cumulative NbUVB. Serum levels of C-reactive protein (CRP) and vitamin D were not associated with clearance or remission duration. Early treatment response from weeks 2-3 was predictive of final outcome. For example, achieving PASI30 at week 3 was significantly associated with PASI90 at the end of the course [36/77 (51%) vs. 2/24 (8%), P<0.001]. Raised BMI and positive smoking status predicted poorer phototherapy response. For the first time, we have shown that PASI clearance trajectory over the first 2-3weeks of UVB, can predict psoriasis clearance. This is an important new step towards developing psoriasis personalized prescribing, which can now be formally tested in clinical trials. These simple clinical measures can be used to inform patient treatment expectations; allowing treatment modifications and/or switching to alternative therapies.

Experiences of training and delivery of Physical therapy informed by Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (PACT): a longitudinal qualitative study

ObjectivesPhysiotherapy informed by Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (PACT) is a novel intervention that is related to improved disability and functioning in people with chronic lowback pain. This study explored physiotherapists experiences over time of the PACT training programme and intervention delivery. DesignA longitudinal qualitative study using semi-structured, in-depth, individual interviews at three time points was conducted. MethodsA phenomenological approach underpinned the methods. Interviews followed topic-guides developed a priori. Transcribed interviews were coded inductively to generate themes. Data were member checked by participants and validated by two researchers. ParticipantsEight clinical physiotherapists from three secondary care centres in the United Kingdom (n = 5 female; age, 24 to 44 years; duration of practice, 3 to 14 years) were included. ResultsFive themes emerged from the data. Experiential learning techniques were challenging but valued because they bridged theoretical principles and concepts with practice. Ongoing individual and group supervision was beneficial, but required tailoring and tapering. PACT delivery extended physiotherapy skills and practice, including techniques that acknowledged and addressed patient treatment expectations. With experience, participants desired greater flexibility and autonomy to tailor PACT delivery. ConclusionsPACT training and delivery were acceptable to physiotherapists. Existing skills were developed and additional, applicable approaches were provided that addressed psychosocial and behavioural aspects of chronic low back pain.

Pre-treatment expectations of patients with spinal metastases: what do we know and what can we learn from other disciplines? A systematic review of qualitative studies

BackgroundLittle is known about treatment expectations of patients with spinal metastases undergoing radiotherapy and/or surgery. Assuming that patients with spinal metastases share characteristics with patients who had spinal surgery for non-cancer related conditions and with advanced cancer patients, we performed a systematic review to summarize the literature on patient expectations regarding treatment outcomes of spinal surgery and advanced cancer care.MethodsA comprehensive search was performed in MEDLINE, EMBASE and PsycINFO for studies between 2000 and sep-2019. Studies including adult patients (> 18 years), undergoing spinal surgery or receiving advanced cancer care, investigating patients’ pre-treatment expectations regarding treatment outcomes were included. Two independent reviewers screened titles, abstracts and full-texts, extracted data and assessed methodological quality.ResultsThe search identified 7343 articles, of which 92 were selected for full-text review. For this review, 31 articles were included. Patients undergoing spinal surgery had overly optimistic expectations regarding pain and symptom relief, they underestimated the probability of functional disability, and overestimated the probability of (complete) recovery and return to work. Studies highlighted that patients feel not adequately prepared for surgery in terms of post-treatment expectations. Similarly, advanced cancer patients receiving palliative treatment often had overly optimistic expectations regarding their survival probability and cure rates.ConclusionsPatients tend to have overly optimistic expectations regarding pain and symptom relief, recovery and prognosis following spinal surgery or advanced cancer care. Pretreatment consultation about the expected pain and symptom relief, recovery and prognosis may improve understanding of prognosis, and promote and manage expectations, which, in turn, may lead to better perceived outcomes.Trial registrationPROSPERO registration number: CRD42020145151.

“You'd be better off to do the keyhole and make a good job of it” a qualitative study of the beliefs and treatment expectations of patients attending secondary care with degenerative meniscal tears

BackgroundCurrent clinical practice guidelines for degenerative meniscal tears recommend conservative management yet patients are frequently referred to the consultant orthopaedic surgeon despite a lack of evidence for the use of arthroscopy. ObjectivesTo explore the beliefs about their condition and treatment expectations of patients referred to a secondary care orthopaedic clinic with a degenerative meniscal tear. Design and MethodsDesign and MethodsThis qualitative study involved ten patients who participated in semi-structured telephone interviews. Data were subjected to thematic analysis and findings were reported in accordance with the Consolidated Criteria for Reporting Qualitative Studies. ResultsAnalysis identified five themes. Participants described beliefs, strongly influenced by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) results, that damaged structures were causing their knee problems (“The meniscus is busted”), and expected their knee problems to inevitably worsen over time (“It's only going to get worse”). Participants were hopeful the orthopaedic consultation would clarify their problem and lead to a subsequent definitive intervention (“Hopefully they will give me answers”). Most participants viewed surgery as “the quick and straightforward solution” necessary to repair faulty cartilage. Exercise was not seen as compatible with the recovery process by most (“Would I make it worse?“). ConclusionsHow participants understand their knee problem contributes to surgical expectations and perceptions that it is not amenable to conservative management. Findings suggest a need to educate both patients and primary care clinicians about the safety and efficacy of exercise as first-line therapy for degenerative meniscal tears. The negative role of MRI in promoting surgical expectations needs further consideration.

Patient preferences for allogeneic haematopoietic stem cell transplantation: how much benefit is worthwhile from the patient\u2019s perspective?

Oncological studies have shown that patients consider small benefits sufficient to make adjuvant chemotherapy worthwhile. We sought to determine the minimal survival benefits that patients considered enough to legitimate allogeneic haematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HCT) and the factors associated with patient preferences. One hundred eighty-four patients having previously received allogeneic HCT at our centre were included and completed a questionnaire exploring patient expectations elicited by time trade-off scenarios as well as quality of life (QoL), symptoms of graft-versus host disease (GvHD) and sociodemographic characteristics. The majority of patients considered a minimal survival benefit of at least 5 (38.6%) or 10 years (41.9%) sufficient to justify HCT, with less than 5% considering survival < 1 year sufficient to warrant HCT. In terms of minimal cure rate, a cumulative 14.8% of patients accepted cure rates below 30% and 30.6% rates below 50%. Likelihood-ratio tests were significant for the effect of age at transplant on expected minimal survival (p = 0.007) and cure rates (p = 0.0001); that is, younger patients at HCT were more likely to accept smaller survival and cure rates. Pre-transplant risk score, QoL, GvHD score and sociological factors did not seem to influence patients’ expectations. In conclusion, patient expectations of treatment were much higher than what had been reported in oncological studies. Patients who experienced HCT considered a survival superior to 1 year and cure rates above 50% sufficient to make it worthwhile. Younger patients were more likely to accept smaller benefits; no other predictors for preferences could be detected.
